Why the Magpie?

The meaning behind the mark

Why the Magpie?

Most creatures, when placed before a mirror, react to their own reflection as if it were a stranger. The magpie is different.

A bird, a mirror, and a beautiful picture of what counseling can open inside us.

Most creatures, when placed before a mirror, react to their own reflection as if it were a stranger. They posture, they retreat, they ignore it entirely. The image means nothing to them because they have no framework for understanding self. The magpie is different. In studies going back decades, the magpie has demonstrated what scientists call mirror self-recognition — the ability to look into a reflection and understand: that is me.

It’s a small thing, maybe. A bird and a mirror. But what it represents is enormous.

Self-recognition is the beginning of everything.

It’s the root of empathy, of growth, of being able to take an honest look at your life and say — this is who I am, and this is who I want to become. So many of us walk through our days as strangers to ourselves, reacting to the world around us without ever pausing to ask what’s happening within us. We deflect. We perform. We become very good at seeing everyone else clearly while keeping our own reflection just slightly out of focus.

That’s not a character flaw. It’s human. And it’s exactly what counseling is for.

Angie chose the magpie because her work is fundamentally about that moment of recognition — the one that changes everything. Not judgment. Not fixing. Just the quiet, sometimes startling experience of seeing yourself — your patterns, your wounds, your resilience, your worth — with clarity and compassion. That moment doesn’t arrive on a schedule, and it can’t be forced. But with the right support, it comes. And when it does, it tends to open doors that have been closed for a very long time.

If you’ve found your way here, there’s a good chance you’re ready to look. This is a space for exactly that.
